Iris florentina

Orris root powder comes from the roots of the plant Iris Florentina.  It possesses many medicinal properties.  The root is either used along with other herbs for various medicinal purposes or can be taken in tea. It also acts as a blood purifier, a gland stimulator and enhances the functions of the digestive tract.

Orris root powder is commonly used in face powders and cosmetics because of its fragrance and active constituents. It helps to retain moisture and elasticity and remove harmful toxins. Powdered orris root has been linked to growing long, beautiful hair - just a pinch on the scalp leaves the hair feeling soft and fragrant.

The characteristic violet odour is gradually developed during the drying process and does not attain its maximum fragrance for at least 2 years. It was used many centuries ago to keep linen smelling sweet. It was the main ingredient in almost all face powders, foot powders, sachet powder, dental creams, violet scented soaps and cosmetics, and potpourri for many years.

Orris root is used in treatment of oedema and other water retention problems. It is also used sometimes for bronchitis, coughs, and sore throat; for colic; and for congestion in the liver. Relieves shortness of breath, resists poisoning, starts menses as a uterine stimulant, and reduces bruises if used externally.

Dried orris root smells like violets. It is used primarily as a base for natural toothpastes, and as a fixative in perfumes to enhance other aromas.

Orris Root (Violet) Perfume

Ingredients:
  • 1 part orris root powder
  • 9 to 13 parts Jojoba or Almond Oil / or oil of choice
  • bottle with roller ball
Method:    Mix the orris root powder and oil. Macerate for three days to one week in a warm place.  Then strain the oil through muslin and bottle.
