Matricaria recutita:    Chamomile is a powerful nervine and a potent anti-inflammatory.  It is one of the most favoured herbal tea ingredients. The aromatic flowers are also a tasty addition to herbal lemonades.

German chamomile as a traditional herbal product, is used for minor gastrointestinal complaints including bloating and spasms. It is also suggested to soothe colds, minor ulcers, and inflammations of the mouth and throat, and topically applied to ease irritations and minor inflammations of the skin, such as sunburn and superficial wounds.

Information on the traditional uses and properties of herbs are provided on this site for educational use only, and is not intended as medical advice. If you have any serious health concerns, you should always check with your health care practitioner before self-administering herbs.

As an antispasmodic, chamomile can relax the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, easing cramping and soothing digestive discomforts. As a mild bitter, it can stimulate the gastric secretions and improve the appetite.   Drink as a tea or alternatively as a cold infusion (said to be better for indigestion) after dinner to ease heartburn, bloating and indigestion.

Chamomile’s carminative, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and nervine actions make it an excellent partner for people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colitis, stomach ulcers, diverticulitis, diarrohea, constipation, and other digestive issues

As a nervine, it eases anxiety and tension and promotes a restful sleep in both children and adults.  Clinical studies have been undertaken to show that it can ease the symptoms of PMS both physical and emotional and as it is antispasmodic in action can be used to treat menstrual cramping.

As an anti-inflammatory herb, chamomile can be used topically for skin irritations such as rashes, abrasions, and insect bites and stings.

Chamomile & Rose Bath Tea Recipe

Taking a bath at the end of the day before bed as part of your bedtime ritual, especially if you have been having problems sleeping, would be very beneficial.

You will need, epsom salts, organic rolled oats, chamomile flowers, some rose petals, a few drops of lavender essential oil.

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl thoroughly.  Add the mixture to a small reusable muslin bag (or tea bag) and drop into the bath with you.  You could also add a favourite carrier oil to the bath at this stage too to moisturise the skin.  Compost everything and rewash your bag.   You can make up a big jar of this and keep beside the bath for when you need next.
