Humulus lupulus

Hops are antibiotic, antimicrobial and antispasmodic. They are also liver stimulating, a diuretic, a sedative, astringent and a blood cleanser. Hops is a well known ingredient in beer. Common medicinal uses include: to aid digestion, as a natural remedy for PMS and menopause, reduces fluid retention, relieves IBS, treats insomnia, tension and anxiety, relieves pain, reduces fever, and kills intestinal worms.

Hops are known to increase the flow of urine, which assists a sluggish gallbladder and tones the liver. It has also been used to soothe skin inflammations and reduce rheumatic pain.

The blossoms are used to make a brown dye.

Caution:   If you are pregnant then it is best to avoid hops tea altogether, as it causes uterine contractions that stimulate menstruation.  Breastfeeding women should avoid this herbal tea as it is not recommended for children under the age of 2.
