In ancient times Mugwort was considered the herb of choice for protection and prophecy. Dedicated to Artemis and Diana, Mugwort was used for pain and healing, psychic powers and lucid dreaming. It was also known to protect travellers on long journeys.
It is a visionary herb, and is used today for increasing psychic powers. It has been used by Native Americans as a smudge to purify the environment. In Chinese acupuncture it has been used for over 3000 years - used in moxibustion - which is  a process where the leaves are burned over acupuncture points to aid in releasing energy. Moxibustion can help treat menstrual cramping, and stimulate a regular menstrual cycle.  Drinking the tea was and is still used by women experiencing late periods as it relaxes the uterus.
Caution:  Do not use if pregnant
Today, Mugwort is used to stimulate and ease menstruation, assist our digestion and liver function, it can expel parasites and relax the nervous system. The leaves may be smoked for a dreamy, relaxed effect. Mugwort may be drunk as a tea at night to induce colourful and lucid dreaming. Other health benefits of mugwort include: treatment of diarrhoea and constipation, headaches and nosebleeds, for insomnia, nerve problems, fever and chills.
Mugwort leaves are also used in cooking for their bitter flavour and as a natural insecticide in the garden.
When making a tea remember to cover the cup while the tea is infusing.
Mix with lavender and some honey to make a tea before heading off to bed.
